When volunteer Marilyn Meller visited Amka to teach last spring, she thought the grey plaster on the buildings was grim. She has returned for a month to oversee painting of the buildings inside and out. That look of cheerful determination tells you that she will make it happen!

After three hours, our new friends must move on.

By: Ann

Judy McAtee and her group of travelers: Alice, Nancy, Jan, Sherrie, Janet, Phyllis, Dottie and Carol....and Chui (leopard in Kiswahili). They shared their love of learning and let a group of Tanzanian children know that there are people in the world who care about the quality of the education they are receiving. They backed up that message with nine suitcases of school supplies and donations that will be used for scholarships, construction and to help pay for the new school bus. Three hours and a suitcase may not have seemed like much to each visitor, but they had a huge impact at Amka.

Educators led by Judy McAtee

By: Ann

In September, nine educators visited Amka Afrika led by Judy McAtee. Like Phyllis DiFrancesco pictured here, they stepped right into our classrooms and taught lessons we had planned during August. They also brought nine suitcases full of very welcome school supplies and donations!

Students in Class One clapped in rhythm and learned to sing “Where is Thumbkin?” from Phyllis. Everyone in the class now knows where Thumbkin is, and they won’t forget.

03/11/2013 - Standing Room Only At Amka

By: Ann
Category:

Dear Friends, there is standing room only at Amka Afrika School. This is true in the classrooms and in the school van. We are close to 70 kids and the Baby Class is overflowing. It's wall-to-wall desks. Luckily, Simon started building two new classrooms in January. The first one in already under roof and the second has walls that are almost complete. Gabriel, the man who constructed the original two classrooms, is heading up this project. His daughter Rebecca attends Amka.

The new Amka Afrika School. The original classrooms and water tank are on the left, with glass windows and locking doors. The first new classroom (with an office!!) is the section under roof. The second new classroom has walls almost up to the roofline.

The new Amka, from the back. Original classrooms are on the right, the first new classroom and school office are under roof, and the second new classroom has walls almost up to the roofline.

Gabriel, in orange, supervises the construction of the two new classrooms.
