After a month of diligent work, Volunteer Marilyn Meller and her crew of painters are nearing the end of this phase of painting Amka's campus buildings. The colors pick up on the earth and the sky, fitting beautifully into the landscape. What a change from February 2011. Check out the difference by looking back on our Facilities page!

End of January 2014. Ann takes Talent out for skipping practice. All roof trusses are now in place for the new dorm in the background. A second toilet has been added to serve the dormitory. Residential girls are currently housed in a home on the edge of the campus and boys in the kitchen storage room. Those less-than-satisfactory arrangements will soon change!

Office in Classroom Building 4

By: Ann
Category:

This office in Classroom Building 4 will soon hold many, many supplies that have been locked up at Ann McConachie's house since they arrived in the container a year ago. Shelves will line one wall of the office, where Ann will have a place to work, keep records, and store and check out supplies. The painters will install glass windows in the office and two classrooms. In just a few days, Amka will have four completed classrooms and an office. Simon and Teacher Marysiana have a meeting in the new office.

The painting project has gone through several stages.

By: Ann

The painting project has gone through several stages. First, a white cement was spread with a trowel over every classroom building, inside and out, and the water tank. This was followed by hand sanding the entire project! Then, a white primer coat was applied. Finally, a first and second coat of the color will be applied. There are two painters and they work nonstop, seven days a week. They sleep in a rented room near the school on mattresses on the floor. They take their meals at the school.

NIU senior Lucia Hoffman is student-teaching for eight weeks this term in the early childhood classrooms at Amka. Prepared by NIU to begin where her students are, Lucia has already assessed their level of readiness and will soon be teaching her first lessons. Amka students bring a rich home culture to school, but one that does not match up with the state curriculum. Also, they are quite different from middle class suburban preschoolers in America. In addition to these challenges, Lucia is working in two languages. What an experience and what an adventure!
